Statistics for the Behavioural Sciences

. An Introduction begins with an introduction to the basic concepts, before providing a detailed explanation of basic statistical tests and concepts such as descriptive statistics, probability, the binomial distribution, continuous random variables, the normal distribution, the Chi-Square distribution, the analysis of categorical data, t-tests, correlation and regression.

This timely and highly readable text will be invaluable to undergraduate students of psychology, and students of research methods courses in related disciplines, as well as anyone with an interest in the basic concepts and tests associated with statistics in the behavioural sciences.

*Statistics for the Behavioral Sciences*

Publisher: Worth Publishers; 1st edition | ISBN. 0716750074 | September 18, 2007 | 736 pages | PDF | 64.3MB

In Statistics for the Behavioral Sciences, Susan Nolan and Tom Heinzen convincingly convey the social power and the personal benefits of statistical reasoning while faithfully teaching its underlying mathematical principles. Chapter-specific narratives let students encode and retain their learning through vivid associative memory hooks that all carry the same message: Statistics has a success story to tell. Embedding that story within each chapter makes learning statistics easier by making it more meaningful.

The *book* achieves several objectives: it presents a conceptual-intuitive approach, presents *statistics* within an understandable *research* context, deals directly and positively with student weaknesses in *mathematics* . and introduces new terms and concepts in an integrated way. The result is a text that students can learn from as well as enjoy.

*Gary Heiman* is a professor at Buffalo State College. Praised by reviewers and adopters for his readable prose and effective pedagogical skills, he has written four books for Houghton Mifflin (now Cengage Learning): Basic Statistics for the Behavioral Sciences, Research Methods in Psychology, Understanding Research Methods and Statistics, and Essential Statistics For The Behavioral Sciences. He received his Ph.D. in cognitive psychology from Bowling Green State University.

This was a pretty easy-to-follow and understand textbook. Sometimes, though, the language is a little too basic, and makes the reader feel as if he were a child. Overall, the book was written clearly and made learning statistics a lot more bearable.

This book combines the quantitative aspects of statistics with written explanations of what the results of statistical tests mean in a way that students will understand. The book includes a student friendly system of pedagogy to ensure student success.

Author incorporate APA style in examples and an appendix to expose students to the expected style of prose. For students with math anxiety or who just need a refresher on basic mathematical functions, he has included an appendix so that faculty are not forced to spend class time reviewing these basic concepts.

Where possible, included examples and projects for students to conduct research on their own lives to draw personalized meaning from the world of statistics.
